Scientific evidence shows that the health benefits of circumcising baby boys outweigh the risks. But the “benefits are not great enough to recommend routine circumcision,” the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a policy statement, and the decision to circumcise should be up to the parents in consultation with the child’s doctor.

Benefits

Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. Washing an uncircumcised penis is generally easy, however.

Decreased risk of urinary tract infections. The overall risk of urinary tract infections in males is low.

Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections.Circumcised men might (research has not proven this to date) have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Prevention of penile problems. Occasionally, the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract (phimosis).

Decreased risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it’s less common in circumcised men.

Do The Health Benefits Of Male Infant Circumcision  Outweigh the Risks? Physicians from outside the United States challenged the AAP’s New Policy Statement on male circumcision claiming the studies the AAP’s task force used were questionable and weak and have little relevance in a Western context. Boys should be able to decide for themselves when they are old enough.
