UNDERSTANDING MTHFR GENE MUTATION AND PREGNANCY BEFORE YOU GET PREGNANT
The MTHFR gene plays an important role in processing amino acids and Vitamin B9 or folate. If either mother or father has a mutation of the MTHFR gene it can cause health problems, miscarriages in pregnancy, and even death of the fetus. Both mother and father can pass on the MTHFR gene to their baby through their DNA.
Because this gene mutation reduces the body’s capacity to digest and process folate, MTHFR can cause some pregnancy complications:
Neural tube defects
Blood clotting disorder
Autism in the child (80-85% are MTHFR)
ADD/ADHD behavioral issues in the child
Allergies (high histamine)
Placenta gets clots and causes miscarriage
WHAT TO DO 3 MONTHS BEFORE PREGNANCY
- 3 months before you get pregnant, increase (different from folic acid) levels, B6 & B12 through diet. This can lower the incidence of congenital complications during pregnancy. See list of foods below.
- Before you get pregnant, have your B12 levels tested. If they are low, you can’t use folate supplements. It can cause harm for some MTHFR gene mutations.
- Before you get pregnant, talk to your OBGYN or MTHFR specialist about what supplements and how much you may need for pregnancy.
- Avoid Folic Acid
- Decrease gluten, sugar, processed foods in your diet.
- Increase both Prebiotics and Probiotics into your diet.
